National Fitness Day was recently celebrated, and many of us saw the positive buzz across social media, with countless individuals highlighting the role physical activity plays in helping us lead healthier, more active lives. There was a huge range of activities suggested for people of all ages, from 'plank-offs' to yoga and Pilates classes, treadmill challenges, high-street HIIT classes, dance, walking, and much more. Yet, when the day comes to an end, it seems many of us drift back into our sedentary routines, forgetting the lasting benefits that come with regular movement and outdoor activity.
As our fitness expert Rachele reminds us, “Exercise gives women the power to take control of their fitness and training through any hormonal phase.” The benefits of exercise extend far beyond the physical. In particular, Rachele highlights how regular physical activity can help counter hormonally-triggered mood swings in women, especially during peri-menopause and menopause, but also in younger women dealing with hormonal imbalances. ‘By releasing endorphins, exercise plays a vital role in boosting our mental and emotional well-being’.
But the advantages don’t stop there, exercise is also essential for maintaining bone health. As Rachele explains, ‘Bone density is influenced by several factors, including physical activity. Regular weight-bearing exercises, combined with adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and other key nutrients, are crucial for preserving bone density throughout life. Prioritising movement helps protect our bones and reduces the risk of osteoporosis as we age’.
Often, our biggest barrier to incorporating more exercise into our lives is our mindset. It’s easy to get caught up in daily tasks and stressors, putting physical activity on the back burner. Now, with winter approaching and colder, darker days ahead, it will take extra commitment to shift our perspective and embrace more outdoor activities or make consistent visits to the gym. However, the long-term benefits of staying active are well worth the effort.
So, let’s not wait for another designated fitness day to remind us of the importance of movement. By fostering a sustainable, year-round approach to fitness, we can enhance not just our physical strength but also our mental and emotional well-being. Whether it’s a daily walk, a yoga session, or lifting weights, let’s commit to moving our bodies regularly and reaping the rewards of a healthier, happier life.
National Fitness Day might be over, but our journey to better health shouldn’t stop there. By making exercise a regular part of our lives, we can improve our mood, protect our bones, and boost our overall well-being. This winter, challenge yourself to stay active, embrace new forms of movement, and make fitness a priority because the benefits extend far beyond just one day.
As I conclude, know that you are not alone on this path to better health and wellness. Your journey is unique but together we form a community of strength and support.
Let’s thrive together,
