Discovering and Maintaining Your Inner Calm

Life can be a whirlwind, and when anxiety comes knocking, finding your balance might feel like an uphill battle. We all face stress triggers, juggling work deadlines, financial worries, relationship bumps, and the responsibility of caring for both children and aging parents. It's a lot to handle, and I get it. Stress and anxiety are challenges that as women we all grapple with due to our unique physiology, and acknowledging this is the first step toward finding peace.

The toll of constant stress on our health can be subtle but profound. It might be silently unravelling your well-being without you realising it. We often underestimate the importance of sleep in reinforcing our immune function, fighting off infections, and maintaining our mental health. Yet, during stressful times, sleep is often elusive. Reclaiming a good night's sleep becomes crucial, and establishing habits that foster internal peace and relaxation is key. From mindful eating to limiting screen time before bedtime, these small changes can have a big impact on restoring healthy sleep patterns. I understand that it's easier said than done, but committing to regaining balance is a journey worth taking.

One common thread in stress and anxiety is shallow breathing. While we can't always control our heart rate or perspiration, we can consciously control our breath. Numerous strategies exist to guide you in achieving optimal breathing patterns, and my personal experience has shown me the power of connecting with nature as a coping mechanism. Nature has become my refuge, both in what I consume and in where I immerse myself physically. Starting with water, the simple act of drinking and rinsing my face with cold water (add some ice for that perfect chill) throughout the day helps cool my body and momentarily alleviate anxiety. Swapping sugary snacks for nuts adds essential proteins and helps stabilise blood sugar levels, contributing to a healthier brain function.

Part of my go-to stress-busting strategy involves consuming 5-10 walnuts daily. Walnuts are in fact packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and tryptophan, a fundamental component in the synthesis of serotonin. Serotonin plays a key role in the quality of our sleep and is also necessary for the brain to produce melatonin, the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. Trust me walnuts are really amazing in promoting quality sleep!

Taking a walk in nature while savouring the nuts, and appreciate the surroundings for just 20 minutes can make a world of difference. Nature's impact on mental health is well-documented, with cortisol levels dropping and emotional well-being soaring in the midst of parks and forests.

Amidst a hectic day, I carve out time to breathe in the fresh air, practice my breathing exercises, and immerse myself in the beauty of the outdoors. Focusing on the present moment, letting my senses guide me, and pausing anxious thoughts bring about a lasting internal calm that lingers throughout the day. If you truly want to see positive changes and improvements in your anxiety level, be consistent with this. Turn it into a habit, and you'll soon notice a transformation in your life, an improvement that matters.
